An Online ChatGPT Exporter, No Extension Needed
ChatGPT has no button to save one chat as a file. Its own export is all or nothing: one ZIP with every conversation as raw JSON and a chat.html page that tries to load your whole history at once. This page turns that ZIP into something you can read: a list you can search, and clean documents for the chats you pick.
Extensions work differently. They read the chat you have open, so they need permission to see your ChatGPT tab, and they break when the site changes. Working from the export needs no permissions and handles hundreds of chats in one go. The catch is the wait for the email, so for one answer right now, paste it into ChatGPT to PDF or ChatGPT to Word.
The same page reads Claude exports too, and tells them apart on its own. See the Claude chat exporter for how to get one.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I export my ChatGPT conversations?
In ChatGPT, open your profile menu, then Settings, then Data controls. Next to Export data, click Export and confirm. The Android app has the same option under Data controls. OpenAI emails you a link labeled Download data export. Download the ZIP while signed in to the same account, drop it on this page, and pick the chats you want as PDF, Word, or Markdown.
Can you export a single ChatGPT chat?
Not from ChatGPT itself. Its export always covers your whole account as one ZIP of JSON. This page fills the gap: drop the ZIP, type a word from the chat into the search box, click the chat to preview it, and download just that one as a PDF, .docx, or .md file. For one answer you have open right now, copying it into the ChatGPT to PDF tool is quicker than waiting for an export.
Is there an online chat exporter for ChatGPT?
Yes, this page. It runs in any modern browser with nothing to install, and it works from the official data export instead of your open ChatGPT tab, so it needs no permissions. It is not a browser extension, so it cannot add an export button inside ChatGPT, and it does not read share links (chatgpt.com/share/...), because that would mean fetching the page through a server.
How long does it take to receive the ChatGPT export?
Small accounts often get the email within minutes. A long chat history takes longer: OpenAI says an export can take up to 7 days. The download link expires 24 hours after the email arrives, so download the ZIP soon. If the link has expired, request a new export from the same Data controls screen.
Why is my ChatGPT data export not working?
The usual causes: the email went to spam or promotions, the 24 hour link expired, or you opened the link while signed in to a different account. ChatGPT Business and Enterprise users cannot export their own data, so that goes through the workspace owner, and Edu workspaces can export only if an admin has turned it on. Large accounts may get the export as several ZIP parts: drop all of them at once. If this page says the download was cut off, download it again.
What happens when you export your ChatGPT data?
Nothing in your account changes. The export is a copy: chats, memory, and settings stay as they are. The ZIP holds conversations.json with every chat as data (split into conversations-000.json, conversations-001.json, and so on for large accounts), plus chat.html, user.json, message_feedback.json, shared_conversations.json, and the images and audio from your chats. This tool reads only the conversations files.
My export is hundreds of megabytes. Will it work?
Yes. The ZIP is streamed in chunks inside a background worker, and only the conversations JSON is unpacked. Images and audio are skipped without being decompressed, so the page stays responsive. Split exports and exports that arrive as a ZIP inside a ZIP both work.
What happens to edited messages and regenerated answers?
ChatGPT keeps every version of an edited message or a regenerated answer as a branch. The exporter follows the branch you were looking at last, the same one the chat shows when you open it, and leaves the older versions out.
Are images, canvas documents, and code included?
Code blocks and canvas documents are included, with canvas edits applied in order. Images you uploaded or generated stay in the ZIP and appear as a placeholder with the file name or image prompt. Python runs and web searches are hidden like they are in the chat, and the Include tool steps box adds them back.
Is my chat history uploaded anywhere?
No. The ZIP is read by JavaScript in your browser and the files are built on your device. Nothing is sent to a server, and there is no sign up or watermark.
