LaTeX Equations in Word: Native, Not Images

Word does not read LaTeX. Pasting a formula from Overleaf or a chat window leaves you with backslashes and braces, and retyping a page of math in the equation editor takes longer than writing it did. Converters that turn each equation into a picture look right but cannot be edited, searched, or resized.

This converter parses the LaTeX and writes each formula as an OMML equation, Word's native format, so fractions, roots, sums, integrals, and subscripts stay editable. It handles the LaTeX that homework, lab reports, and short papers use. For long documents with custom packages, Pandoc is still the more complete tool, and the note under the converter tells you exactly what was left out.

Going the other way? The Markdown to LaTeX converter writes a .tex file you can open in Overleaf. For a chat answer without much math, ChatGPT to Word and Markdown to Word work the same way.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I convert LaTeX to Word?

Paste your LaTeX into the box or open the .tex file, check the preview, and click Download .docx. Sections become Word headings, lists and tables become Word lists and tables, and every equation becomes a native Word equation. It works on a full document with a preamble, on a few bare equations, or on a chat answer with $...$ math.

Are the equations editable in Word?

Yes. Each equation is written in Word's own equation format (OMML), the same thing Insert > Equation creates, so you can click it, edit it in Word's equation editor, and change its size. They are not images. The .docx also opens in Google Docs and LibreOffice.

How do I get ChatGPT or Gemini LaTeX into Word?

Copy the answer, paste it here, and download the .docx. Chat assistants write math as \( ... \), \[ ... \], or $...$ inside markdown, and both the math and the markdown formatting convert. If you only want the formatted answer, ChatGPT to Word does the same job with a selection paste.

How do I convert a LaTeX equation to Word?

Paste the equation without dollar signs, then click Download .docx for a Word file, or Copy equation for Word to paste it into a document that is already open. The copy puts MathML on the clipboard, which Word for Windows turns into an editable equation. Some versions, including Word for Mac, may paste it as code instead. Word for Microsoft 365 can also take LaTeX itself: press Alt+= to insert an equation, choose LaTeX on the Equation tab, paste, and convert it to Professional.

Can I convert an Overleaf project?

Paste the main .tex file, or download it from Overleaf and open it here. The text, sections, math, lists, and tables convert. Files pulled in with \input or \include, images, and the .bib bibliography are not read, because only one file is pasted. The note under the converter lists anything that was skipped.

Which LaTeX is supported?

Sections, \textbf, \textit, \emph, \texttt, itemize, enumerate, description, equation, align, gather, multline, inline math, tabular, \href, \url, footnotes, \title and \maketitle, abstract, theorem and proof environments, verbatim and lstlisting code, and simple \newcommand macros. Comments and the preamble are dropped.

What does not convert?

TikZ and other drawings, bibliographies and \cite numbering (citations show their keys), equation numbers and \ref numbers (references show the label name), custom environments, and package-specific commands. Matrices and cases come through as readable text inside the equation rather than as a Word matrix. Unknown commands keep their text and are listed in the note.

Is this a Pandoc alternative?

For the common case, yes. Pandoc converts LaTeX to Word from the command line and covers more of LaTeX, but it needs an install and a terminal. This page runs in the browser with nothing to install, which suits a homework set, a chat answer, or a short paper.

Is my document uploaded?

No. The conversion and the .docx are both done in your browser. Your LaTeX never leaves your device.
