Why Confluence Export Does Not Give You Markdown

Confluence can export a page to PDF or Word and a space to HTML, XML, or PDF. There is no markdown option, and the HTML export is full of Confluence specific classes and macro markup that generic converters do not understand. The usual workarounds are a Marketplace app, which needs an admin to install, or a script against the REST API, which needs an API token.

Copying is simpler. When you copy a page, Confluence puts its rendered HTML on the clipboard. This converter reads that HTML, recognizes Confluence's panels, code blocks, status lozenges, mentions, Smart Links, tasks, and expands, and writes the markdown equivalent of each.

How to Export a Confluence Page to Markdown

  1. Open the page. View mode and edit mode both work.
  2. Open every expand you want to keep. A closed expand does not copy its content.
  3. Select the content. In view mode, drag from the title to the end of the page. In edit mode, click into the page body and press Cmd+A or Ctrl+A to select just the page.
  4. Copy, then click the paste box above and paste.

Pasting into the box needs the formatted copy, so copy straight from Confluence rather than through a plain text editor.

Cloud vs. Server and Data Center

Confluence Cloudrenders pages with Atlassian's newer editor. Copying gives panels, code blocks, status lozenges, and Smart Links with data attributes that this tool reads, so a Jira Smart Link comes through as [PAY-1423: Title](url) with its status.

Confluence Server and Data Center render macros as classic HTML: the info, tip, note, and warning macros, the code macro, the Jira issue macro, and inline tasks. Those convert too. If you have the page as wiki markup or as storage format from the REST API (expand=body.storage), paste it into the second tab instead.

Use It in GitHub, Obsidian, or Notion

  • GitHub renders the panel callouts as colored alerts and the expands as collapsible sections, so a page moves into a README or wiki with little cleanup.
  • Obsidian reads the same > [!NOTE] syntax as callouts. Put downloaded attachments next to the note and the image links resolve.
  • Notion turns pasted markdown into blocks but does not know the callout syntax, so choose Plain blockquotes first.
  • ChatGPT, Claude, NotebookLM, and RAG pipelines work better with markdown than with Confluence HTML. It keeps the structure and uses far fewer tokens.

Going the other way? The Markdown to Confluence converter turns markdown into formatted text or wiki markup for Confluence. For Jira tickets, use Jira to Markdown. For web pages, Google Docs, or Word, use the HTML to Markdown converter.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I export a Confluence page to markdown?

Open the page, select its content, and copy it (Cmd+C or Ctrl+C). Then click the paste box on this page and paste. Confluence puts the page on the clipboard as HTML, and this tool turns that into GitHub Flavored Markdown with code blocks, tables, panels, and task lists intact. Copy the result or download it as a .md file.

Does Confluence have a built-in markdown export?

No. Confluence exports single pages to PDF or Word and whole spaces to formats like HTML, XML, and PDF, but none of them is markdown. Marketplace apps and API scripts can do it, but they need an install, an admin, or an API token. Copy and paste needs none of those.

Do I need a browser extension or Marketplace app?

No. Copy and paste works in Chrome, Firefox, Edge, and Safari without installing anything, and it needs no Confluence admin and no API token. Extensions and Marketplace apps are worth it when you export many pages or whole page trees on a schedule. For one page at a time, this is quicker.

Does it work with Confluence Server and Data Center?

Yes. Pages copied from Confluence Server and Data Center convert the same way, including info, tip, note, and warning macros, the code macro with its language and title, status lozenges, the Jira issue macro, task lists, and expand macros. You can also open a page saved from the HTML export.

Can I convert Confluence wiki markup or storage format?

Yes. Switch to the wiki markup tab and paste either one. Storage format, the XHTML that Confluence stores and the REST API returns, is recognized by its ac: and ri: tags. Text that starts with an HTML tag is read as HTML, and everything else as wiki markup like h1. and {code}, even when a {code} block holds HTML. Macros, ac:link page and user links, ac:image, and ac:task-list all convert.

What happens to info panels, status lozenges, and expands?

Info, note, tip, success, warning, and error panels become GitHub alert callouts like > [!NOTE], which GitHub and Obsidian render in color. Choose Plain blockquotes if your destination does not support them. Status lozenges become inline code like `DONE`, and expands become a <details> block with the expand title as its summary.

Why is the content of an expand missing?

Confluence does not render the body of a closed expand, so it is not on the clipboard when you copy. Open every expand on the page, then copy again. The tool tells you when it finds a closed one.

What happens to images?

Images with a lasting URL keep it. Confluence Cloud serves attachments through signed links that expire, so those become a reference to the file name, like ![diagram.png](diagram.png). Download the attachments into the same folder as the .md file and the images resolve in Obsidian, GitHub, and most editors.

Can I convert a whole Confluence space at once?

Not in one step. This tool converts one page at a time. For a large migration, export the space to HTML and open the pages here one by one, or use a script that pulls pages through the Confluence REST API, such as an open source Python exporter.

Is my Confluence content uploaded anywhere?

No. The conversion runs entirely in your browser. Nothing is sent to a server, and no Atlassian login or API token is involved.
