What Works Well and What Does Not
Works well: reports, papers, ebooks, manuals, and exported documents with a real text layer. Headings, paragraphs, bulleted and numbered lists, and reading order in single column layouts come through cleanly.
Needs cleanup: multi column layouts, tables, footnotes, and forms. PDF stores positioned text rather than document structure, so these come out as plain lines.
Not supported: scanned or photographed pages, which need OCR, and password protected PDFs.

How do I convert a PDF to markdown?

Is my PDF uploaded?
No. The PDF is parsed with PDF.js right in your browser tab. It never reaches a server, so contracts, statements, and other private documents stay private.
Does it work with scanned PDFs?
No. A scanned PDF is a picture of text with no text layer, so there is nothing to extract without OCR. The tool tells you when a PDF has no text. Run it through an OCR tool first, or give the pages to ChatGPT or Claude as images.
Are tables converted?
Not as markdown tables. PDFs store table cells as positioned text with no table structure, so table content comes out as lines of text. Clean those up by hand, or paste the table region into an AI assistant and ask for a markdown table.
How are headings detected?
The most common font size in the document is treated as body text. Larger sizes become headings, up to three levels, and short bold lines become lower level headings. Page numbers and headers or footers that repeat on most pages are removed.
