Jira Cloud, Server, and the API
Jira Server and Data Center store descriptions and comments as wiki markup, so the wiki output pastes in directly. The Jira Cloud REST API v2 also accepts wiki markup in description and comment fields, which makes this handy for scripts and Automation rules that post generated text.
The Jira Cloud editor (and REST API v3) uses Atlassian Document Format instead. For the editor, use Copy for Jira and paste formatted text.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does Jira support markdown?
Not directly. Jira Server and Data Center use their own wiki markup, where *bold* is bold and h1. is a heading. Jira Cloud's editor recognizes some markdown shortcuts as you type but shows raw symbols when you paste a block of markdown.
Which output should I use?
Use wiki markup for Jira Server or Data Center, the text mode of the Cloud editor, the REST API v2 description and comment fields, and Automation rules. Use Copy for Jira to paste formatted text straight into the Jira Cloud editor.
Why is bold different in Jira?
In markdown, a single asterisk means italic and two mean bold. In Jira wiki markup, a single asterisk means bold and underscores mean italic. Pasting markdown bold into Jira produces stray asterisks, which is the most common formatting bug this tool fixes.
Are code blocks and languages preserved?
Yes. ```python becomes {code:python}, and common aliases like js, ts, sh, and yml are mapped to the names Jira's code macro expects. Fences with no language become a plain {code} block.
Can I paste a GitHub issue or PR description into Jira?
