Confluence Cloud uses a rich text editor that accepts formatted paste. Use Copy for Confluence.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does Confluence support markdown?
Only in limited ways. The Confluence Cloud editor turns markdown shortcuts into formatting as you type, such as ## for a heading, but a pasted block of markdown usually stays as raw text or lands in a code block. Server and Data Center can insert markdown or wiki markup through Insert > Markup. This converter turns a whole document into either format in one step.
How do I paste markdown into Confluence Cloud?
Paste your markdown here, click Copy for Confluence, and paste into the Confluence editor. Headings, tables, code blocks, lists, and links arrive formatted. Confluence Cloud's editor converts some markdown as you type, but pasting a whole block of markdown usually shows the raw symbols.
How do I use markdown in Confluence Server or Data Center?
Click Copy wiki markup, then in the Confluence editor choose Insert > Markup, select Confluence wiki as the format, and paste. Code blocks become the Code Block macro with their language set, and quotes use the quote macro.
Does Confluence have a markdown macro?
Some instances have a Markdown macro, but it renders markdown at view time, so the content is not editable as normal Confluence text and does not match your space styling. Converting once gives you a native page.
Are code blocks syntax highlighted?
Yes, in wiki markup the language on a fenced code block carries over, for example ```js becomes {code:javascript}. Common aliases like ts, py, sh, and yml are mapped to the names Confluence expects.
Can I move a GitHub README into Confluence?
Yes. Paste the README markdown and copy it out. Relative links and images stay relative, so update those to absolute GitHub URLs if you want them to resolve from Confluence.
