Reading Claude's conversations.json
Open a Claude export in a text editor and you get a wall of JSON. Every chat is an object with a name, timestamps, and a chat_messageslist, and the list holds every version of every edited message, in the order they were written rather than the order you read them. The plain text of each message swaps artifacts for "This block is not supported on your current device yet."
This page does the untangling. It follows the parent links to rebuild each chat as you saw it, reads artifacts from the structured content, and lays the result out as a document with a heading per turn. Choose PDF to share or print, Word to edit, and Markdown for notes apps like Obsidian or to feed back into another model.
It reads ChatGPT exports as well. The ChatGPT exporter page explains how to get one. For a single reply you have open right now, copy it into ChatGPT to PDF or ChatGPT to Word, which handle Claude replies too and need no export.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I export a Claude chat?
On claude.ai or in the Claude desktop app, open Settings, then Privacy, and click Export data. Anthropic emails a download link to the address on your account. Download it while signed in, drop it on this page, and save any chat as PDF, Word, or Markdown. The mobile apps cannot start an export.
My Claude export downloaded as several files. Which one do I use?
Newer Claude exports can arrive as several files instead of one ZIP: a small .json index plus ZIPs such as conversations-000.zip, projects-000.zip, and memories-000.zip. Your chats are in conversations-000.zip, so drop that one, or select all the files and drop them together. Older exports, a single ZIP with conversations.json inside, work too, as does the conversations.json on its own.
How long is the Claude export link valid?
The link expires 24 hours after the email is delivered, and it only works while you are logged in to Claude. If it has expired, run the export again from Settings, Privacy to get a new one.
Can I export just one Claude conversation?
Not from Claude itself: the export always covers every chat, as one conversations.json file. That is the part this page fixes. Drop the ZIP, search for the chat, and download only that one, or tick several and get them in one document or a ZIP of Markdown files.
Why does my export say "This block is not supported on your current device yet"?
Each message in the export has a plain text field, and that field replaces artifacts, tool calls, and thinking with that sentence. The real content is in a second, structured field. This exporter reads the structured one, so artifacts come back as code or documents instead of the placeholder.
Are artifacts included?
Yes. Code, documents, HTML, SVG, and Mermaid artifacts appear where Claude made them, labeled with their title. When Claude edited an artifact later in the chat, the edit is applied and the updated version is shown at that point. Files Claude created in its computer environment are included the same way.
What happens to edited messages and retried answers?
Claude keeps the old versions in the export, linked as branches. The exporter follows the most recent branch, which is the version the chat opens on, and leaves the older ones out.
Are my uploaded files and images in the export?
Their names are, and each one shows up as a note under your message, like [Attached: lease.pdf]. The PDF, Word, and Markdown files do not include the uploads themselves. Team and Enterprise exports also leave out the contents of uploaded files.
Is there an online Claude exporter without an extension?
Yes, this page. It reads the official export in any modern browser, so there is nothing to install and no access to your Claude tab. Because it is not an extension, it cannot add an export button inside Claude, and it does not read share links (claude.ai/share/...). Extended thinking is left out, and web searches and other tool calls are hidden unless you tick Include tool steps.
Is my Claude history uploaded anywhere?
No. The ZIP is read in your browser, in a background worker, and the PDF, Word, and Markdown files are built on your device. Nothing is sent to a server.
Can I export a Claude Team or Enterprise workspace?
Members can export their own chats only if an owner turned on member exports. The Primary Owner exports the whole organization from Organization settings, Data and privacy. A member export works here the same way as a personal one.
