Tips for the Best Conversion

  • Use Word's heading styles. Text that is only made large and bold looks like a heading but converts to a bold paragraph. Headings set with Heading 1, Heading 2, and so on convert to # and ##.
  • Use real lists. Lines typed with a dash or number at the start convert as plain text. Lists made with the list buttons convert to markdown lists with their nesting.
  • Mark code with a monospace font. Text in Consolas, Courier, or a style named Code converts to markdown code.

Is my document uploaded to a server?

What formatting is preserved?

Headings (from Word's Heading and Title styles), bold, italic, strikethrough, links, bulleted and numbered lists including nesting, tables, block quotes, and code in monospace fonts. Page layout details like columns, headers, footers, and text colors are not part of markdown and are dropped.

What about images?

Images are left out so the markdown stays small and readable. Embedded images would otherwise turn into huge base64 strings.

Can I convert .doc files?

Only .docx. Older .doc files use a different binary format. Open the file in Word, Pages, Google Docs, or LibreOffice and save it as .docx first.

How do I convert Google Docs to markdown?
