How to Copy a Jira Description as Markdown

Jira Server and Data Center keep descriptions and comments as wiki markup. Switch the editor to text mode, copy, and paste into the wiki markup tab. The Jira REST API v2 returns the same wiki markup in the description and comment fields, for Cloud too, which makes this handy for scripts and exports.

Jira Cloud shows issues with the same renderer as Confluence Cloud. Select the description or a comment, copy, and paste into the Paste from Jira tab. Code blocks, panels, tables, mentions, and status lozenges convert. The REST API v3 returns Atlassian Document Format JSON, which this tool does not read, so use v2 or copy and paste.

Why Convert Jira Tickets to Markdown

  • Move an issue to GitHub or GitLab with its code blocks and tables intact.
  • Paste a ticket into ChatGPT or Claude as clean markdown instead of wiki markup, so the model reads the structure and not the syntax.
  • Reuse a ticket description in a commit message or pull request.
  • Keep bug reports and specs in Obsidian or a docs repo.

Going the other way? The Markdown to Jira converter writes Jira wiki markup from markdown. For Confluence pages, use Confluence to Markdown, and for anything else you can copy from a web page, the HTML to Markdown converter.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I copy a Jira description as markdown?

In Jira Cloud, select the description or comment in the issue view, copy it, and paste it into the Paste from Jira tab. In Jira Server or Data Center, open the field in text mode and copy the wiki markup into the first tab. Either way you get markdown you can paste into GitHub, Notion, Obsidian, or an AI chat.

Do I need a Jira app or browser extension?

No. This works in any browser without installing anything, and it needs no Jira admin and no API token. Marketplace apps that add an Export Markdown menu to every issue make sense if your whole team does this daily. For the occasional ticket, copy and paste is enough.

Does Jira support markdown?

Not as a format you can copy out. Jira Server and Data Center store text as wiki markup, where *bold* is bold and h2. is a heading. Jira Cloud stores Atlassian Document Format and its editor only accepts some markdown shortcuts as you type. Neither has a "copy as markdown" option, which is the gap this converter fills.

Where do I get Jira wiki markup?

From the text mode of the Jira Server and Data Center editor, from the description and comment fields of the Jira REST API v2 (Cloud included), from Jira exports, and from Automation rules. Paste it as is.

Which Jira formatting is supported?

Headings (h1. to h6.), *bold*, _italic_, -strikethrough-, +underline+, ^superscript^, ~subscript~, ??citations??, {{monospace}}, {code:language}, {noformat}, {quote}, bq., {panel:title=...}, {color}, tables with ||header|| cells, [text|url] links, !image! embeds, [~user] mentions, [^attachment] links, nested * and # lists, ----, line breaks, and emoticons like (/) and (x).

How do code blocks convert?

A {code:java} block becomes a fenced ```java block, and a title parameter becomes a bold line above it. {noformat} becomes a fence with no language. The code inside is copied exactly, without any formatting applied.

Can I move Jira issues to GitHub issues?

Yes, one at a time. Convert the description here, paste it into the GitHub issue, and the headings, code blocks, tables, and lists render. Attachments are written as links to the file name, so upload them to the GitHub issue and update the links.

What about mentions and colored text?

A mention like [~jsmith] becomes @jsmith. Jira Cloud mentions carry an account ID instead of a name, so they come out as @ followed by that ID. Markdown has no text color, so {color} tags are dropped and the text is kept.

Is my ticket content uploaded?

No. Everything runs in your browser, so ticket text never leaves your machine and no Jira login or API token is needed.
