Three Ways to Get Markdown into Google Docs
1. Copy and paste (fastest). Use this page to render the markdown, click Copy for Google Docs, and paste. Best for adding an AI answer or a README section to a document you are already working on.
2. Import a .docx (best for whole documents). Click Download .docx, upload it to Drive, and open it with Google Docs. The document outline picks up every heading, which makes long documents easy to navigate.
3. Google's built-in markdown support. Turn on Tools > Preferences > Enable Markdown. Docs then formats markdown as you type it. It is handy for writing, less so for pasting large blocks with tables.

How do I paste markdown into Google Docs?

Does Google Docs support markdown?
Partly. With "Enable Markdown" turned on under Tools > Preferences, Docs converts markdown as you type, and newer versions add Paste from Markdown and Copy as Markdown to the Edit menu. The setting is off by default. This tool works without changing any settings, shows a preview first, and can also produce a .docx.
How do I import a markdown file into Google Drive?
Click Download .docx, upload the file to Google Drive, then right-click it and choose Open with > Google Docs. Drive converts it to a native Google Doc with the headings, lists, and tables in place.
Why does my ChatGPT answer paste into Google Docs with asterisks?
When the copied text is plain markdown, Docs shows the syntax literally: **bold** keeps its asterisks and headings keep their pound signs. Running it through this converter first puts formatted text on the clipboard instead.
Do checklists work?
Task list items like "- [x] done" paste as list items that start with a checked or empty box character. Google Docs' own interactive checklist format cannot be created by pasting, but you can convert the list with Format > Bullets & numbering > Checklist.
